Product Description
BorgWarner 179171 S400SX3 Turbocharger — S471/83, 1.10 A/R, Race Cover, T4 Housing
BORGWARNER 179171 (S400SX3) combines a 71mm S471 compressor with an 83/74mm turbine and a twin-scroll T4 1.10 A/R housing. The race cover’s ported-shroud inlet improves surge margin for big-fuel builds. Ideal as a high-power single or as the low-pressure charger in S300/S400 compounds.
Key Specifications
- Compressor (S471): ~71.0 mm inducer / ~100 mm exducer, extended-tip (race cover with 5.0" inlet, 4.21" V-band outlet)
- Turbine: 83/74 mm wheel, 1.10 A/R twin-scroll T4 housing
- Center Section: journal bearings; adjustable compressor & turbine housing orientation
Universal-fit performance turbo. Verify manifold flange (T4), downpipe, oil feed/return, and charge piping. For street manners with smaller displacement or stock fuel, consider compounds.

FAQ
Will the 179171 bolt onto my stock manifold?
No. It uses a T4 twin-scroll inlet. Most light-duty OE setups are T3. You’ll need a T4 manifold and compatible downpipe.
What’s different about the race cover?
It has a ported-shroud/anti-surge inlet that broadens the compressor map to handle aggressive fueling and higher mass flow without surge.
What are the inlet/outlet sizes?
Compressor: 5.0" hose inlet, 4.21" V-band outlet. Turbine: 3.5"–4" (Marmon) outlet depending on housing selection; 179171 commonly ships with 1.10 A/R T4 twin-scroll.
Is it streetable as a single?
On smaller displacement/stock fuel, spool is later than an S300. For best driveability, pair it in compounds or ensure supporting fuel & converter/gearing.
Do I need an oil restrictor?
Typically no for journal-bearing S400s; use a clean, properly sized feed and a free-draining -10AN to -12AN return. Monitor oil pressure.
